Carol Danvers: Captain Marvel by SebastianvonBuchwald Carol Danvers: Captain Marvel by SebastianvonBuchwald
I often get stuck without knowing what to draw next. When that happens, I turn to my sketchbook or I just dive into my latest Mario Versus piece. So when Project: Rooftop asked for drawings of Carol Danvers in her new Captain Marvel persona, I was relieved because I needn't think about my subject matter any longer.

I wanted to get as ridiculous as I could with as many different layers of shading as I could cram in this piece. I tried to channel Frank Cho's tough looking Carol (the definite Carol in my book) so I decided against the generic flying pose and went instead for a more "power gloating" kind of stance. I realized early on that, composition-wise, this piece if very similar to my Power Girl piece and it's driving me crazy because I hate to repeat myself. Also, to be fair, I totally ripped the background off the awesome Ed McGuiness cover.

As a sidenote, I really like the costume but, as with most people, the hair will take some time to get used to.

Excellent piece, dude. You've captured her fightjock mentality, and I love the aggression. Certainly a good deal different than the usual pinup heroines.

That said, I hope you don't mind, but I've included it in a blog of mine. ([link]). If you want me to take it down, I'd be more than happy too. And if you don't want this link floating around, I'm happy to delete it as well. Not trying to suck pageviews, just don't want to be using your work without permission.

And no worries, as long as I'm properly credited (which is something you've kindly done) I have zero problems with having my work floating around. I encourage it, in fact. ;)

I know I'm in the minority but I love her new look and hair, something about it really clicks with me in ways that Carol's classic look never did.

Oh and those that don't like her new hair-style should really check out the in-comic art it's much better done then on the cover.

I totally back you up. I love the more militant vibe to her costume, it feels like a uniform. She's a soldier, it makes sense that she'd wear more than just a leotard (however sexy the leotard look is).

Yeah, I dig it myself. I mean, it gets bonus points for being just a little different. And I agree, some artists will make it work better than others.

Awesome! Only thing I don't like is that you didn't draw all her hair so I cant make a wallpaper out of it.

Yeah, sorry about that. I never really try to make these work as wallpapers. I guess some of the more horizontal pieces could but definitely not this one. :(

This is a godawful design and the title won't last... She'll be back in the Ms. Marvel suit within a year-and-a-half, two tops.
That's her best outfit, best ID.
This doesn't even rank as politically correct nonsense to be frank --
This just smacks of Marvel putting something into print to preserve a precious copyright they've never been that serious about. Let's face it -- the reason why we see spin-off's of Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, and so forth is to copyright/trademark any-and-all potential sidekick/"character family" names!

NONE of the Marvel "Captain Marvel" comics have lasted beyond 2-3 years and by far the biggest critical hit (and most reprinted) run is the Jim Starlin run of the 1970s that introduced Thanos.
(Even the Starlin title was cancelled at least once or twice before it finally gave up the ghost around issue 50, 60.)

It's like Marvel and DC don't even care what most of us think anymore... They just throw up anything and see what shit sticks to the fan! I have also noticed a tendency of Marvel to reprint anything at the whims of the editors -- honestly, were there THAT many fans of the last Ms. Marvel title? Did it really rank getting any reprints in hardcover let alone trade?

And let's face it -- very few of the female character titles are written well and appeal to much more than fanboys who have to every issue of a particular character or collect solely out of habit.

What's amazing about the era we live in is that the female characters are taken out of decently feminine/sexy outfits and put into either drab, butchish (sorry, but Carol Danvers looks butch in that outfit and it's just not a great design to begin with!) OR get poured into a slutty, streetwalker outfit.

Prime example of a semi-slutty redesign --
What's amazing to me is that people complained about Wonder Woman's outfit but it had been around for 70 years! Now it's great because it's been redesigned (rather lousily, I might add!) by Jim Lee and his cohorts?

This is all opinion but it's informed opinion... I collected this crap for close to 30 years before I finally said "NO MORE" last year and I've kept that vow...

yeah she is...put into a coma by Rogue (unless they retconned that) and took a long while for her to get back into her own...Dark star, Ms Marvel and now rightfully the new Captain Marvel, long may it last.

The costume looks kick-ass but the hairstyle just sucks.
They should have kept her long hair and maybe kept her Ms. Marvel mask on.

Or better yet, how about not change her AT ALL? Just leave her as our good ol' Ms. Marvel.
If they wanted to make a new Captain Marvel and a FEMALE version, why couldn't she just be her own individual character?

:iconsebastianvonbuchwald:
I really like the way McGuiness draws her hair actually. I dunno, I'd love for brand new female characters in general but the market just isn't there to support it, I suppose.

That's your opinion and I totally respect that.
In my personal opinion they should have done these things:

1. Either KEEP the original Ms. Marvel.
2. Make her into Captain Marvel but DON'T mess up the hair but give her a cool costume.
3. Or make a female Captain Marvel but to be her own independent character.
Reply
:iconsebastianvonbuchwald:
Sadly, two of those three things have proven to be unsustainable in the current market. No Captain Marvel book (even those featuring established characters) has lived for long and Ms. Marvel's own book was canceled as well. A Captain Marvel book with a brand new female character wouldn't float for more than three issues at most.

So I guess they had no choice but to make MS. MARVEl the new Captain Marvel.
It's like they HAD to make her the new CM, not that they wanted to.
Reply
:iconsebastianvonbuchwald:
I think they're just trying to make the character stick. Don't forget that her origin is tied to the original Captain Marvel so the name change isn't totally unfounded (she wasn't called "Ms. Marvel" for nothing). Using the Captain Marvel name upgrades her from a second tier hero (like Spider-Woman or She-Hulk for example) to something that should give her more prominence. I applaud the move and I like Carol as a character so I hope it works out.

Spider-Woman is NOT a second tier hero! She's the best hero Marvel ever had!
Reply
:iconsebastianvonbuchwald:
I mean second tier only in the sense that she wouldn't exist without Spider-Man just like She-Hulk wouldn't exist without the Hulk or Ms. Marvel without Captain Marvel. It has nothing to do with how good or bad the characters are.
