Starfire Redesign by SebastianvonBuchwald Starfire Redesign by SebastianvonBuchwald
Without getting too much into it, I think that the Starfire controversy last year was partly due to a failure in the writer and artist to properly convey the nature of the character and not so much in the skimpiness of it all. Koriand'r shouldn't be covered up like a nun, she's an alien princess and she should be more Dejah Thoris than Lilandra, which is what I tried to capture in my redesign.

I tried to elevate the "princess" aspect of the character, making her a bit more regal looking and I braided her hair because I thought it looked ridiculous otherwise. Hopefully, this version of the character can convey a sense of strength, presence and confidence in spite of the skin that's showing which, in my eyes, keeps the Tamaranean true to the character that George Perez and Marv Wolfman created.

PS: Is the background too tacky?

A far better redesign then "slutfire" in the New shitty 2......

I like to think so. Would do it very differently if I had to redesign her again though.

Still not a fan of her "superhero bra/panties combo", but this design is so much better than the horrible redesign DC decided to use...

Yeah, I'm 100% percent on some of the choices I made here myself. If I were to do it again it'd be a whole different story, I'm sure. Glad you like it though. :)

I've been a huge admirer of Starfire since I followed the Teen Titans in the 80s. Although I am not usually a fan of changing the appearance of a character, I have to admit that this is a great redesign! Nicely done!

I am not too familiar with the history of Starfire, other than Teen Titan. Is she a fairly new character?

:iconsebastianvonbuchwald:
She's from the 80's I believe so yeah, relatively new.

I rarely see redesigns of Starfire that I actually like, but this one is really good

I was never a DC fan but I do loved Starfire and several other DC characters. She was really the only reason why I read many of the Teen Titan comics back in the day. When I saw the page of the new Starfire or 'whorefire'..I had a whole new reason not to read their comics 9__9 My husband showed me one of the newest Batman comics where Catwoman pretty much rapes the Bat. eeeyeah. I can only hope DC will kill off what's left of my favorite characters before they catch some kind of alien STDs which is what will happen at this rate -___-

ANYWAY!

I really like your design of Starfire. Never really thought of her with a braid. It's a whole new and strange concept that I like! There's nothing wrong with Super Women looking sexy. Oh no. Sexy is good! You do her justice here.

Thank you, that's much appreciated. As a guy, it's nice to get a girl's approval in this sort of thing. Sometimes with my drawings (and I'm sure I must be capable of doing this in at least a couple of pieces) I feel like I have no way of knowing if I'm dehumanizing women and turning them into nothing sex objects. If a woman is OK with then, then I must be doing something right.

Sexy and sexism are not the same thing. It's all about context. Her costume wasn't the problem, I mean she's from another planet with a different set of rules, naturally she's gonna have a different standard on clothing, sex and just showing skin. Her culture isn't really full of that "oh if they are proud of their bodies they are whores" bullshit we see too often here on Earth. (It helps that the men don't wear much either, so no double standards)

The real issue was how her character was being used in the reboot. There's a difference between a woman who enjoys causle sex and someone who has the memeroy span of a goldfish.

True but, invariably, people's tolerance on this matter will differ from others. I'm sure some people just can't justify the way she's dressed, regardless of the reasoning behind it. Different people draw different lines in the sand, I suppose. Can't please everybody.

I guess what I'm getting at is it'd be like us going to an isolated tribe and telling them to cover up. Why? They don't make a big deal over their women being topless and act like the world is gonna end over nipples, it's pretty hot where they live and you're telling them to put more cloths on?

They don't have any of that horrible stigma attached to sex or nudity because of courrpt relgious extreamest so why ruin it for them? Let it them stay free from all the bs, don't bring your baggage with you and put it on them thus making something so inconcent to them suddenly become "dirty" or "evil".

:iconsebastianvonbuchwald:
Agreed and that's a perfect example right there about tribal cultures. The funny thing is that I'm sure that there ARE people that champion for these cultures to dress more like ours. I think the main problem is that people come into this with an agenda and just block out everything else. As I said, hard to please everyone though there are certainly people that handle gender stuff with more class than others.

Yeah. God help us if we ever do get visited by aliens and someone won't leave them alone for having a different culture then us. I get everyone has different opinions about what cool and whats not but people need to realize others are not gonna share their opinion on where the line is drawn and where something goes to far and to just respectfully disagree.

I mean pestering someone over and over again to change their opinion, views and belifes to be more like someone elses is what lead to a lot of wars in history.

I agree, Starfire has never been known for an unrevealing outfit, but true to Perez and Wolfman, that worked for her as an innocent fanservice lady. She's a creature of passion, but also of kindness. I've stuck with RHATO since the relaunch started, and the character seems to slowly be getting back some of the heart she had pre-reboot. Really like your design here, it's not that different from the current outfit, but still distinctive. The armor plating manages to work with the traditional purple quite excellently!

I only read the first issue but yeah, Lobdell implied that characters would be explored and evolve further. Certainly her forgetting about Dick Grayson struck as planting seeds for more character development later. And thanks for your comments on the design. I didn't want to radically alter her or make unrecognizable so I kept a good number of her costume's elements here.

SPOILER: It seems that she lied about completely forgetting people, as we caught her whispering Dick's name when she was beaten and left unconscious by an enemy in another issue. That and from several flashbacks in #6, she still has memories of her time with him, perhaps sign that she's trying to keep her hold over those memories, as they are important to her? Time will tell, I guess, I'm sticking with every New 52 title at least until the Second Wave hits in May. XD

And yeah, I'd say that you definitely succeeded there! ^^

I read all the first issues but I'm sitting on the "waiting for the trade" table for most of the New 52 stuff. The Starfire thing has certainly died down so maybe there were too many assumptions being made? We'll see, I guess.

wow great redesign and i love that you have her hair in a braid, i think it was more starfires personality change than appearance that sparked controversy though i would like to see the old starfire again.

Beautiful work on Starfire! And I agree that the problem behind Lobdell's version of her isn't how she looks (her new look is gorgeous), but rather how she's portrayed, they totally messed with her character >_<

I still think that DC will 'retcon' the whole 'New Starfire' with some kinda amensia/brainwash/DC is covering their ass type thing. which I'll welcome if we never see the starfire Scott Lobdell presented us.

Awesome redesign btw you keep the core of the character while giving her a fresh new look.

Thanks! And yeah, I'm sure it's just a temporary thing. Lobdell said to "wait and see." Either way, I don't think it was the best way to reboot/reintroduce the character.
