This is proof that "not according to plan" can yield positive results sometimes.
My plan was to have the fight take place in a Mushroom Kingdom version of the platforms from the very opening levels of the first two Kingdom Hearts games. This is mostly because the worlds in KH are largely Disney based and what other setting defines the series outside of those? Traverse Town? I went with the platform because a) it's simple (I'm so very lazy) and b) it's iconic to the opening segments of those games. I decided to do the platform in its entirety and then later modify it to fit underneath the characters and I spent a good hour just working on a vector version of said platform (which you can find here [link]
) so I could resize it to my heart's content. Most of the platform is obviously lost in the final piece but I expected that. So far, so good.
Now this is where things diverged from my original plan. My initial sketch had Mario blocking an attack from Sora and there would be cartoony stars and sparks from that clash, much like in the KH games, which would contrast with the bloodied characters. That was my "hook" for this piece. Unfortunately, I couldn't get a good pose for both characters wherein Sora wasn't completely covered by his Keyblade so I changed the pose and completely forgot about my hook. I only remembered that I had nothing interesting going on in this piece after I was well into coloring and I was at a loss. I thought about putting Donald and Goofy in the background and I thought about changing the setting as well but everything seemed contrived. So I watched the intro videos for both games a few more times looking for inspiration and it hit me: it has to be the freakin' birds. It wouldn't be about the characters or actions anymore, I could make it about the moment. That became my hook.
The rest, as they say, is history.
