So we have Mario fighting a space marine in green armor, a funky helmet and known for his large arsenal of weapons and my first thought was: how do I not turn this into another Mario vs. Master Chief? I thought about finding an angle to this piece that was interesting without being a repeat and, with Doom being the granddaddy of first person shooters (Wolfenstein was a sort of prototype in my eyes), the answer was to literally use another angle, i.e. first person.
Everything else just kinda came from that. I know Doom is a shooter but if I was gonna play the first person angle Doomguy had to be up close because weapons are shot at a distance and I didn't want him to be a green dot in the background, hence the use of the brass knuckles for close combat. Initially, the canvas was cropped in really close (because I'm lazy and didn't want to draw a lot of background, I imagine) and I was in a bit of a loss as to the background. I definitely wanted to set it in hell but I didn't think Doom and Doom 2 had a lot of interesting stuff background-wise so I looked to Doom 3 and found some really awesome screenshots of skulls and stuff from some hell stages and I went for something similar. I enlarged the canvas to give the background more breathing space and got to work. I didn't go for painting this time because a) it's a huge pain in the ass and b) I wanted the background to be simpler so it didn't take attention away from the characters.
Add in a reflection of Mario in Doomguy's visor and we have a piece.
Next up, Mario vs. The Spy of Team Fortress 2.
